Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Adults

Helio Gracie developed the principles of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. It gives the weaker the ability and the confidence to defeat stronger and heavier opponents. The discipline was advanced by his son Royler. Now, Ivan continues those teachings here in Melbourne. At Melbourne Jiu-Jitsu Academy you will learn the fundamentals of this martial art, often referred to as ‘The gentle art’.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is founded on simple and instinctive movements. It was designed so that students could learn practical self-defence as quickly and efficiently as possible. As such, The United States Military and law enforcements agencies all around the world rely on it as their crucial hand-to-hand self-defence combat system.

At Melbourne Jiu-Jitsu Academy we are dedicated to the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We will teach you the fundamentals of self-defence, as well as the modern evolution of the martial art.

Our adult self-defence programs are designed to cater to everyone, whatever your training goals might be.

88 vital techniques (Foundation)

Jiu-Jitsu consists of more than 1000 techniques so it can be overwhelming knowing where to start. However analysis of real fights have shown that there are 88 fundamental techniques which are used more often and with greater success than all the other techniques combined. Our fundamentals program is entirely dedicated to the mastery of these 88 essential techniques. You do not need any experience at all to start these classes. Our instructors conduct all classes in a supportive training environment and are committed to ensuring that every new student has an enjoyable experience regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Advanced

Students generally participate in the fundamental program for around 6-12 months depending on their commitment. After completing the Fundamentals program, students have the opportunity to participate in the Jiu-Jitsu advanced (All levels) program. In this program you will continue to refine you current skills while learning new techniques and combinations.

The Advanced (All levels) Program covers all aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including:

  • Self-defence – advanced counters to attacks.
  • Competition-style Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu including throws, reversals, escapes and submission holds.
  • Submission grappling (No Gi class) – similar to the above, but practiced without the traditional Gi.
